Responsible gambling when the casino fits in your pocket
A laptop session has a natural start and end: you sit down, you get up. A phone session has neither. The lobby is two taps away at the bus stop, in bed, in the ad break. That convenience is exactly why the guard rails need to be set in advance, calmly, rather than improvised halfway through a losing streak.
Set the numbers before you play
Most online casinos let you set limits in the account profile: deposits per day, week or month, losses, session length. Where these settings sit in Kanuuna's mobile menu, and which options exist, depends on the operator and the account, so look in the profile or the responsible gambling section after logging in. A few habits make the limits work:
- Decide a monthly amount you can afford to lose entirely, then split it into weeks.
- Add a time limit. On a phone, "one more spin" is measured in minutes that quietly become an hour.
- Lowering a limit is usually instant; raising it is usually delayed. Use that asymmetry on purpose.
- Do not save card details for convenience if you notice impulsive top-ups.
Let the phone help
Your phone already has tools built for this. On iPhone, Screen Time can cap the time spent in a browser or app; on Android, Digital Wellbeing does the same and adds a bedtime mode that turns the screen grey. Remove the casino shortcut from your home screen, switch off promotional notifications and unsubscribe from bonus emails — each of those messages is designed to get the lobby open again. Keeping the phone locked with a PIN, rather than a swipe, adds a small but useful pause.
Warning signs
- You play longer or with more money than you intended.
- You chase losses by raising stakes.
- You borrow or use money meant for bills.
- You hide how much time or money goes into gambling.
- You feel restless or irritable when you cannot play.
Two or more of these are a reason to stop and talk to someone.
Help in Estonia: 15410
The gambling addiction counselling centre (Hasartmängusõltuvuse Nõustamiskeskus) offers counselling on gambling and digital addiction, information and registration for consultations. Contact it by phone on 15410, by email at info@15410.ee or through 15410.ee. Family members and friends can get in touch too.
Reading from outside Estonia? The 15410 centre is an Estonian service. If you live elsewhere, Gambling Therapy offers online support for people affected by gambling, whatever country they are in.
Stronger than a limit: the EMTA register
When account limits are no longer enough, Estonia's register of gambling restrictions, kept by the Tax and Customs Board (EMTA), lets you exclude yourself for 6 to 36 months. It is set up through the e-MTA self-service and covers both land-based and online gambling. Step by step on the self-exclusion page.
A note on tax
Where you play matters for your wallet as well: winnings from an organiser licensed by EMTA are not subject to income tax, while winnings from an unlicensed organiser are taxable income at 22 % and must be declared. EMTA's list of legal gambling organisers is on emta.ee.
